Medicare rebates

In 2006 the Government introduced the ‘Better Access to Mental Health Care’ initiative allowing qualified allied health professionals, such as social workers to accept referrals from GPs to provide ‘focused psychological strategies’ to treat mental health disorders.

As an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker I am able to offer counselling with Medicare rebates if you are referred on a Mental Health Treatment Plan by your GP.  Rebates of $77.80 per session are given for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.

If after 6 sessions you and your GP think you will require more treatment, you will need to see your GP again and ask for a review of your Treatment Plan.  This will entitle you to a further 4 sessions under Medicare.  From October 2020, following your tenth session, a further 10 sessions are available to you under your existing Mental Health Care Plan; you just need another referral letter from your GP to request this .  More information can be found here:

Any subsequent sessions within the calendar year will incur the full fee.

COVID-19 MBS Tele-health Services -

There are new COVID-19 MBS items to enable treatment to continue via video or phone (Telehealth).

This will be part of your GP- referred Mental Health Care Plan allocated sessions.  These sessions will incur a gap payment. See 'prices' page for more.

Please either bring your Mental Health Care Plan to your first appointment or have your GP arrange a copy to be faxed to me on fax: 07 3189 6871.
