Is There a Need for Relapse Prevention for Mental Disorders?

It may be a surprise, but ongoing treatment is typically needed for relapse prevention for mental disorders. This is true for many types of disorders, including anxiety, depression, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, and more. The reasons for this are not always clear, but it is known that relapse is more likely if treatment is completely stopped.

Counselling is needed to assist in the relapse prevention for mental disorders, though there are some that require ongoing medication as well. The input of the counsellor helps to keep you on track and allows emerging problems to be identified and managed before they get out of control.

Without this ongoing care, issues can easily spiral out of control before being detected by anyone who can help, and the result is a relapse of the original condition or the appearance of a new one. Therefore, it is very important to continue with treatment even after symptoms of a mental disorder have disappeared.
